Upgrading from mere delivery to embedding in the supply chain
Danyang is renowned nationwide for its optical lenses. As the world's largest production base for eyeglass lenses, Danyang's optical industry achieved manufacturing and sales exceeding 12 billion yuan in 2023, with the total value of imports and exports in eyewear and optometry exceeding 5 billion yuan.
Behind this globally recognized "business card" lies the significant contribution of the express delivery industry, which has been continuously innovating its services. This is just a microcosm of how express services support the manufacturing industry. In recent years, major express delivery companies have successively entered factories, on one hand, by extending their services to accelerate the transformation into integrated logistics operators, and on the other hand, by embedding themselves in the industrial chain to reduce excessive dependence on e-commerce platforms.
The factory ships 2 million orders per month.
At 3 p.m., the express delivery station at Jiangsu Wanxin Optical Co., Ltd. in Danyang is bustling with activity. In the order preparation workshop, staff are skillfully packaging lenses and packing goods that need to be mailed that day.
Pan Xin, a YTO Express courier, is one of the couriers stationed at the factory. He said that there are currently 8 YTO Express couriers stationed at this eyewear manufacturing enterprise, and the company decides how many couriers to send to the factory based on the order volume each day. "After entering the factory, we can provide more precise services to our customers, and the volume of express deliveries has significantly increased. Now I can collect more than 1,600 parcels every day, and my monthly income has increased by nearly 5,000 yuan."

"We design and provide a variety of packaging solutions according to customer requirements, and there are currently about 600 types of packaging bags here," the on-site staff introduced. They ship around 2 million orders per month and cooperate with mainstream express delivery companies.
Yi Bao Network learned that since 2015, Danyang YTO Express has been cooperating with optical eyewear, achieving synchronized production and shipping through service models such as integrated warehousing and distribution, and end-of-order delivery. Currently, Danyang YTO Express sends out more than 40,000 eyewear orders per day. This cooperation model not only achieves cost reduction and efficiency enhancement for the outlets but also reduces order losses for the enterprise due to shipping delays, enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of both parties.
In Changzhou, SF Express has created an upper warehouse and lower transfer model that can pick goods in real-time according to customer order information and provide delayed delivery services. In this shared warehouse, 4,500 square meters are provided for Jiu Hao Electric Vehicle Company for overseas products. Their lawn mowers, sports bicycles, and go-karts perform very well in the European and American markets, and the company is actively planning its overseas market layout.
To help enterprises go global, SF Express provides Jiu Hao Company with two modes of transportation: full container sea freight and air transport. The sea freight mode can transport goods in bulk to overseas warehouses, and if the enterprise needs sporadic restocking, air transport can also be chosen. Currently, SF Airlines has self-operated direct flights that can fly directly to the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asian countries. To support enterprises in going global, SF Express provides two modes of transportation for Company Nine: full container sea freight and air transport. The sea freight mode can deliver in bulk to overseas warehouses, and if enterprises need sporadic replenishment, they can also choose air transport. Currently, SF Airlines has self-operated direct flights that can fly directly to the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asian countries.
Chen Bing, the head of SF Express's Changzhou supply chain, stated that from 2021 to the first half of 2024, SF has helped customers reduce supply chain costs by 10% in the warehousing and logistics segment. Through optimization of factory logistics and the up-storage and down-transshipment model, the national delivery time has been improved by more than 10 hours, with a delivery on-time rate of 100%, and the fastest delivery time in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Anhui can be achieved on the same day.
With continuous innovation, SF's supply chain now covers the entire chain scenarios from the production end to the consumer end for customers. The services it provides include upstream, warehouse management, transportation, and distribution, integrating and optimizing the entire process of commerce, logistics, and information flows to achieve integrated chain management.
Pain points in the integration process
Express logistics is an emerging industry that connects manufacturers and consumers. How to reduce the logistics costs for enterprises, promote the integrated development of "two industries," and achieve effective quality improvement and reasonable growth in quantity is a practical issue facing the entire industry.
Yi Bao Network found that not limited to shipping, express delivery personnel are now "busy" with production and manufacturing when they enter the factory? This听起来有些不可思议的事, in Changzhou, a city with a developed automotive and core parts manufacturing industry, has gradually become a daily occurrence.
Hoerbiger is an automotive parts manufacturing company that mainly provides key parts for vehicle manufacturers such as Changan, Volkswagen, Great Wall, FAW, etc., and Changzhou Post is responsible for providing warehousing logistics and end-of-line production services for it.
Currently, the number of employees dispatched by Changzhou Post has increased from the initial 30 to more than 120. In addition to packaging, labeling, loading, and shipping, Hoerbiger has also entrusted the entire production process, including material handling, testing, shot blasting, assembly, and cleaning, to Changzhou Post.
"From a single logistics distribution to gradually achieving multiple business segments such as raw material cycle pick-up, warehousing and distribution, factory logistics, warehouse management, finished product transportation, quality inspection and selection, and production line assembly, achieving in-depth integration with the manufacturing industry in 'pre-production, production, and post-production' segments," said Gao Jianzhong, deputy manager of Changzhou Post Logistics Business Branch. The Hoerbiger project has truly driven an annual increase in revenue of 15 million yuan, express delivery volume of 50,000 pieces, and supports an enterprise output value of over 1 billion yuan.
Accelerating the integrated development of the express industry and the manufacturing industry, gradually turning the express logistics network into a "mobile warehouse" for the manufacturing industry. However, at present, the express service for the manufacturing industry is still in its infancy, and there are still some issues that cannot be ignored.Firstly, there is the issue of integrating information systems. The information systems of the manufacturing and express delivery industries may not be compatible, and the data exchange standards may vary, leading to the phenomenon of information silos, which affects the transparency and response speed of the supply chain.
Secondly, the demand for logistics services in the manufacturing industry is diverse and complex, while the express delivery industry often relies on standardized processes to improve efficiency. Finding a balance between personalized services and standardized operations is a significant challenge. Additionally, deep integration requires substantial initial investments, including technological upgrades, information system construction, and talent cultivation, but the return on investment may have a long cycle, affecting the investment decisions of enterprises.
To address the aforementioned issues, various departments at all levels are introducing more specific policy measures to provide financial subsidies, tax reductions, and funding support as incentives for the integration of the two industries. At the same time, they are improving relevant laws and regulations to ensure the protection of rights and interests and standardized operations during the integration process.
